Basic Botany for Family Herbalists

Here’s the introduction to the secret life of plants you’ve been waiting for…

An Online Course Designed to Make You a Better Family Herbalist!

Enroll and your understanding and practice of herbalism and herbal medicine making will take a giant leap forward…

Basic botany and plant identification are absolutely essential skills in the repertoire of the family herbalist, traditional healer or holistic health practitioner.

This 4 module online course provides a basic introduction to the field of botany, plant naming (nomenclature), plant classification (taxonomy) and external characteristics (morphology) from a herbal medicine perspective.

This course is intended for people who have little or no botanical background and who want to develop a working knowledge of herbs.

Module 1: The Scope and Importance of Botany

In this introductory module, you will start your exploration of the field of botany and you will discover why herbalists need a working knowledge of botany. You will also get to know the various “botanist hats” we wear as family herbalists and green healers

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Define the term botany.
  • List the roles of plants in the living world.
  • Explain why herbalists and green healers need to study botany.
  • Describe three basic subdivisions of botany applicable to herbalists.

Module 2: Introductory Plant Taxonomy

When herbalists use herbs, especially medicinally, there is no room for mistaken identity. In this unit we look at the classification, or taxonomy, of plants in more detail, and we learn how they are classified and named.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Describe the classification of plants.
  • Name the father of modern taxonomy.
  • Write plant names in the proper scientific manner.
  • Research the classification of plants using an online database.
  • List reasons for knowing the characteristics of plant families.

Module 3: Basic Plant Morphology

In this module, you will develop a basic working knowledge of flowering plant morphology. There are a bewildering large number of morphology terms but we will only explore some of the more commonly used ones.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:

  • Describe the life cycle of a plant.
  • Name and describe the most common plant habits.
  • Name the parts of the three basic plant organs.
  • Name the parts of a typical flower.

Module 4: A Primer on Plant Identification

Plant identification is a valuable skill in the arsenal of herbalists, botanists and gardeners alike. All it takes is a basic knowledge of botany and a little bit of practice. And there is no better way to practice this skill than to start identifying the plants in your own backyard. Especially those you already know.

Upon completion of this module you will be able to:

  • List the basic field equipment needed for field identification.
  • Explain the chameleon factor.
  • Name the primary diagnostic characters used in plant identification.
  • Name the secondary diagnostic characters used in plant identification.
  • Identify the group a plant belongs to using a short list of just 7 diagnostic characters.
