1) AHA moment, I am very quickly on my way to be vertically ill as I already
show some of the signs.
2) Both analogies make sense to me. Having a banking background, the
account is more applicable to me.
3) Approaching the vertically ill very fast I must start immediately to get my
own health on track.
4) Functional Medicine is to start by measuring how well you are
functioning – whether you are firing on all cylinders.

Actually, both analogies make the most sense with me. Yet the bank account is more conducent to my emotional health, you need to have a positive balance to be able to care for others. Healthwise I am vertically ill, yet some areas are better than others. Functional Medicine is when you measure how well you are functioning, are you firing on all cylinders and have a balanced checkbook. The objective is to assist if you are horizontally or vertically ill, then to improve the body’s ability to move to Superhealth.

Aha moment, was that there is a time where the overdraft runs out. Time is invaluable. One should use it wisely.
Both the analogies made sense to me, so both can be applied effectively to explain health and the effect of disease.
I liked the definition below.(quoted from Institute of Functional Medicine)
Functional Medicine is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. Each symptom or differential diagnosis may be one of many contributing to an individual’s illness.
For example, depression can be caused by many different factors, including inflammation. Likewise, a cause such as inflammation may lead to a number of different diagnoses, including depression. The precise manifestation of each cause depends on the individual’s genes, environment, and lifestyle, and only treatments that address the right cause will have lasting benefit beyond symptom suppression.
In my opinion, functional health ( optimum efficiency) is influenced by functional environment, functional nutrition, functional mental capacity, management of genetic strengthes and weaknesses, and an optimum lifestyle where in a balance exist between, work, health, family, faith, hope and operational environment

I liked the engine of the car analogy more (being a “boervrou”, I don’t like overdrafts……..very negative!!)
I am vertically ill most of the time, but working on that.
Functional Medicine is to look at the source of the illness and how to heal and prevent it, not focusing on the healing of the symptoms.
