I referenced David L Hoffmann
There a 3 types of BUCHU, the botanical names are Barosma betulina = short
Barosma crenulata = oval and Barosma Serratifolia – long
The leaves of the Barosma betulina are the most valued. Buchu leaves are collected while the plant is flowering and fruiting and are then dried.
The leaves have a peppermint odour, and a strongly aromatic taste.
I was able to get vol 1 and 2 “A modern herbal” by M Grieve and visited the other 2 websites. I decided to start with Angelica as my first monograph entry.
Dandelion leaf is a very powerful diuretic, its action comparable to that of the drug `Frusemide’. The usual effect of a drug stimulating the kidney function is a loss of vital potassium from the body, which aggravates any cardio-vascular problem present. With Dandelion, however, we have one of the best natural sources of potassium. It thus makes an ideally balanced diuretic that may be used safely wherever such an action is needed, including in cases of water retention due to heart problems. As ahepatic & cholagogue Dandelion root may be used in inflammation and congestion of liver and gall-bladder. It is specific in cases of congestive jaundice. As part of a wider treatment for muscular rheumatism it can be most effective. This herb is a most valuable general tonic and perhaps the best widely applicable diuretic and liver tonic.
Really enjoyed this little excercise. Started my materia medica with aniseed (as i had only recently used it in a steam to help with my breathing while suffering froma chest infection). I can’t wait to continue this practise with other herbs, spices and plants.
The Latin names for Buchu have been updated since all of these reference documents have been written. The names currently in use is : Agathosma betulina (Long-leaf Buchu) or Agathosma crenulata (Oval-Leaf Buchu).
Editing and refining my Herbal Monograph as I go along.
Buchu has been a staple in my pantry for its diuretic and kidney-protective properties.
I also take information or facts that interests me about a plant and learn that first and grow my knowledge from there. Definitely agree with the statement “less is more” I also used a lot of herbal remedies in veterinary practice as well and it works wonders for animals.
When I had a look at the three different books to choose which one I will take info from for my monograph, it was interesting to note how each one differs from the others in style, and type of info.
Great list of books, I will use them along with others that I have. I looked up red clover; I was surprised that none of the books mentioned menopause or womens’ reproductive health.
Oh my, that took my down a delightful wormhole full of wonderful books and articles! Sadly, I don’t have the resources to purchase everything that I want.
I chose dandelion , already have many clinical trials on the plant and in todays world we do need an adatogen to make people feel good.
pdfdrive also has a huge store of herbal books for other that may be interested.

Thanks! You answered part of my last question in this unit!!

Looking forward to starting with my own monographs

I will definitely be purchasing David L. Hoffman’s book “Health World”
What are your thoughts on Margaret Roberts? I just love her books and have quite a few here in my library!
Getting momentum slowly but surely. Chamomile is a favorite and my new monograph just confirmed again why.

Going threw the list, I found myself going threw a rabbit hole.

Good list of books. I already have some of them on my collections and others, too. Will certainly try to find the ones that I still don’t have.

I acquired eBooks on Amazon for Holistic Herbal(David Hoffmann) and The Herb Handbook(John Lust ), Using the Kindle app on my cell phone.
I have searched all online bookstores and cannot find any of these titles (of the 3 recommended books). Please advise
